Its not Assassin’s Creed IV, but it is a pirate game!
Raven’s Cry is supposed to be a dark action-adventure based in the piratical Spanish main and loosely based around the historical events of the time. You play as Christopher Raven on a revenge quest to track down and kill the people responsible for his family’s death and in the process, get wrapped up in a plethora of treasure seeking, adventure and back-stabbing. It boasts accurate representation of the 17th century and promises a rich Carribean world filled with rolling seas, jungles, caves etc, but is it poised to be overshadowed by AC.IV?
Well lets break it down. Little has been seen or heard from this game since E3 2012 when it surfaced. It was originally being developed by Finland’s Octane games but was given to Reality Pump in August of this year. Its still pegged for a 2013 release date but it is more than likely this will be shifted in light of the heavy weight from Ubisoft entering the fray this autumn. The game is also being published by Topware Interactive, the chaps responsible for Two Worlds and Two Worlds 2 on consoles.
Topware Interactive haven’t the best track record for publishing titles, having released little of any impact aside from the Two Worlds series. Two Worlds 2 sold just over 2 million units, despite Topware Interactive’s delayed and fumbled the release schedule. The publisher chose to pull the title from shelves a week before release making the promising RPG a relative failure. Having been unable to obtain a copy of the sequel, my only source of comparison is Two Worlds which released on Xbox 360 and was a bug ridden and broken mess. From the few that played it, its sequel was pretty good.
So what do we think of Raven’s Cry? Well a year a go it would have had a lot more interest. Sadly Ubisoft will undoubtedly steal the glory if the game is released in the 2013 window. I’m all in favour of a pirate game and think it is a genre that could be explored much more but so many pirate games have really bombed. I regularly think to myself “when will someone make a good pirate game!?”. Is it going to be Raven’s Cry? I very much doubt it.
